Lesson 6 of 48
The coordinate plane
Where a function stops being a table and becomes a shape.
The plane is the first translation device: an equation, a table and a picture become three views of one object. Every loss curve, scatter plot and gradient you meet later is you cashing in this one idea.
Do this
Take a line given in any one of three forms — graph, equation, table — and produce the other two. Do it once for a negative slope and once for a horizontal line.
The question that unlocks the next lesson
A line has slope 0. What do its equation and graph look like?
- Ax = c, a vertical line
- By = c, a horizontal line
- Cy = x, a diagonal through the origin
- DIt has no graph — slope 0 is undefined
