We don't know the jobs. We know the builders.

Nobody can name the job titles of 2040. Here's what we can name: the habits that still matter when the tools keep moving.

Every few years a report lands with a number meant to stop a parent cold. Something like: a large share of kids entering school today will work in jobs that don't exist yet. The figure gets passed around, the anxiety does its job, and the next question arrives on schedule — how do I prepare my child for a future I can't picture?

We don't know the job titles of 2040 either. We are not going to pretend a clubhouse in Richmond has a crystal ball the World Economic Forum somehow missed. What we do know — because we watch it fail and work on Tuesdays — is what kind of kid is still useful when the tools keep moving. Not a résumé. A set of habits.

Stop asking what they want to be

For a long time, career prep meant specializing early. Study accounting to become an accountant. Study engineering to become an engineer. That model assumed the job would still be there, under roughly the same name, with roughly the same toolkit.

When the hard skills of next decade keep relocating, the better question for a kid is not what do you want to be when you grow up? It is what problems do you want to sit with long enough to make something about them?

That is not a slogan we invented for a brochure. It is how the room already runs. A kid who wants to help a grandparent remember names does not need a job title first. They need a problem, a tool, a mentor who will not finish the project for them, and enough stubbornness to ship a version that actually works. The output is the rubric. The title can wait.

The habits that transfer

People call these "soft skills," which undersells them. Soft sounds optional. These are the load-bearing ones when the app you learned last year has a different interface by spring.

Unlearn on purpose. A kid who treats last month's tutorial as sacred scripture will freeze the first time a library changes. A kid who has watched a project break — and then rebuilt it — treats change as a Tuesday. We care less that they memorized a stack than that they can put one down and pick up another without panicking.

Argue with the machine. As routine work gets automated, the scarce skill is not typing a prompt. It is noticing when a confident answer is wrong, incomplete, or quietly unsafe. That is the verify habit: run it, read it, check the edge, only then put your name on it. The model will be a different model in six months. Suspicion of plausible nonsense will still be useful.

Stay human on purpose. Empathy, collaboration, and care do not show up as line items on a parts list, and they are exactly what a model cannot fake well for long. The kid who can explain a broken robot to a teammate, take a note without sulking, or build something that actually helps a person they know — that kid is practicing work that does not evaporate when the API changes.

Build with the tools, don't rent them. Technological fluency is not knowing which buttons to press in this week's app. It is understanding what goes in, what comes out, where the thing fails, and how to wire it into something you made. Use depreciates. Build compounds. Same distinction for systems thinking: see the whole loop, not just the one line that looks guilty.

What parents can do without a futurology degree

None of this requires a curriculum at the kitchen table. Most of it is posture.

Praise the struggle you can see. When a puzzle or a homework problem finally yields, name the attempt — the retry, the different strategy, the part they refused to quit — not only the grade. The number is a worse target than "does it work, and can you explain it."

Leave some boredom alone. Free play and unstructured time are not wasted time. They are where imagination, negotiation, and self-started problems show up. We have a whole argument about boredom as a starting line. The short version: if every gap gets filled by a feed, curiosity never gets a quiet enough moment to surface.

Let them watch you learn badly. If you are wrestling with new software or a hobby you are mediocre at, narrate the awkward middle out loud. Kids already know adults get things wrong. What they rarely see is an adult staying in the room after the wrong answer.

Answer "why?" with another question sometimes. Not as a trick. As practice. "How do you think we could find out?" turns compliance into curiosity. Mentors do a version of this every session — they refuse to be the autocomplete for the kid's brain.

The part that is not intimidating

The future is unwritten. That sentence is usually meant to scare people. We mean it as permission.

You do not need to guess the job title. You need a kid who can meet a new problem without waiting for a worksheet, who can tell a good answer from a fluent one, who can work with other humans, and who treats tools as things you build with rather than things that think for you.

That is the kit. Resilience, curiosity, judgment, care. The rest is a moving target, and chasing moving targets is a poor way to spend a childhood.
