Hi, Bot Machines · Fig. 06
Phone auto-rotate

How does it know which way is up?

It can't see your face. It feels which way gravity pulls. Turn the phone, move the tipping point, then lie down on your side.

For grown-ups: what's really inside

Phones carry an accelerometer: a tiny chip with a weight on springs, etched in silicon. Gravity pulls the weight, and the chip reports which way and how hard. If gravity pulls mostly along the phone's short side, the phone is tipped, so the screen turns sideways.

It measures gravity, a stand-in for what you care about, which is where your eyes are. When the stand-in and the real thing come apart (you lie down), the rule gets it wrong. AI systems trip over stand-ins the same way. Simplified: real phones wait a moment, use extra slack so the screen doesn't flicker near the line, and let you lock rotation.
